AV40 Review: Like stepping in a time machine

AV40’s 40th anniversary tribute of the 1980/81 title winning Aston Villa side is an absolute joy and a must read for any true football fan.

As you turn each page it is like gazing through the prism of Aston Villa forty years ago, and makes you feel as if you were there in the moment for each and every game of such a memorable season.

The book takes the reader on a journey across Villa’s victorious 1981 First Division title win game by game, interspersing match reports with nostalgic photographs, memorabilia, poignant recollections, player profiles and press cuttings from each game.

What makes the journey even more remarkable is that Villa won the league title by using only FOURTEEN players. That would be unheard of in the present day.

The book also reminds readers that the Villa of 80/81 was a team that the national media broadly disregarded throughout the campaign, despite a surge towards the Championship title in 1981.

This was a Championship winning Villa side never outside of the top six all season and which remained amongst the top three from October 1980 onwards.

I’ve been lucky to speak to both captain Dennis Mortimer and Villa icon Peter Withe about the season on CFB and having interviewed both of them and read this book I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Like stepping in a time machine, AV40’s tribute book is a MUST NOT MISS.
