How close did you come to managing Scotland and looking back on your career is that something you wish you had the opportunity to do?
I went for an interview and met Campbell Ogilvie who was in charge of the SFA at the time. I met them in the Hilton hotel at Edinburgh airport.
The interview went very well and I thought I had the chance of getting the job. In fact, to be honest I thought I had the job.
It was all going so well until we started talking about money. That’s when their attitude changed. It didn’t affect me as there is always room for negotiation and I didn’t see things breaking down over money.
Anyway, around three weeks later I was told that they had given the job to George Burley. I actually found by listening on the radio. They didn’t even have the courtesy to come back and say thanks but we decided to go somewhere else.
I didn’t get it then and noises have been made since along the lines of it’s there for you if you want it but management had been and gone for me.
