I was refereeing Wolves v QPR in a Cup tie. After 20 minutes Tommy Docherty manager of QPR came to the touchline and signalled that he wanted to sub Stan Bowles.
The player was taking no notice so I ran across to him and said he needed to go off. His response was to say “F**k off, I am not going!”
I turned to enlist the help of his team mate Tony Currie who responded by saying, “Not my problem.”
With a continued delay I went over to Bowles again. I said to him, “Are you paid for 20 minutes the same has 90 minutes?”
He smiled and ran off. After the game, Tommy Docherty came into the temporary dressing room and apologised. He said it wasn’t Stan that he wanted to sub off…
